To Err is Human...

In the January issue we featured a story on Will and Estate Planning, "How to Minimize Family Upheaval and Avoid Having Your Will Contested." Although we strive for accuracy in our stories, it appears that some of the information in the article may have been misleading. In any case, we always recommend that you have your financial advisor and lawyer review your particular situation.

2003 ACGA Survey: What Does It Mean For You and Your Organization?
Trends in Gift Annuity Rates by John Elbare, MBA, CFP.
We asked John Elbare, MBA, CFP, founder of Florida Philanthropic Advisors, LLC to give some context to the recent ACGA Survey Results. John has over 25 years of experience in non-profit management and fundraising. He has specialized in major and planned gift fundraising for the last 15 years, serving as a major gift officer and planned giving director for the University of South Florida, as CEO for two fundraising foundations, and as a financial planner.

The ACGA survey is reprinted following John's article for your interest and information.

Goodbye Donor Pyramid, Hello Cyclical Fundraising.
Rethinking Planned Giving by Judith Nichols, Ph.D., CFRE
For as long as I can remember, development practitioners have assumed that our best prospects for planned gifts were mature individuals. We preached the donor pyramid: a linear form of donor growth and education. The thinking goes like this: a prospect makes his or her first gift to your organization and, hopefully, moves on to an annual gift commitment. If the not for profit nurtures the relationship and the donor continues to respond, over time the gifts become larger and, ultimately, the organization will receive a bequest or life income arrangement. This scenario makes a lot of sense to everyone and, if we are talking about gifts from our current audience of mature donors (individuals born during the first half of the twentieth century), it is usually the appropriate scenario to follow. However, it may not serve the next generation - known as the Baby Boom (born from 1946 - 1964) who are currently approaching or in mid- life.

Planned Giving as the Golden Arrow of Philanthropy.
Trends in the Planned Giving Marketplace by Terry Burton
Planned Giving may have become the golden arrow of the modern day fundraiser. As the baby boomer generation shifts into retirement mode we are witness to an enormous transfer of wealth from one generation to the next. The planned gift, be it as a bequest or in some other form, has emerged as the type of donation that can create a win-win scenario for both the donor and the recipient.

Influences on Giving, Volunteering Vary by Region Says New Study
02.20.04 -- Depending on where Americans live in the U.S., different factors influence the rate at which they give and volunteer, says a new study.

In the Northeast, households with a volunteer in the family give twice as much to nonprofits as do those with no volunteers, says a study by Independent Sector, a national membership and advocacy group for nonprofits.
